The historic meeting of Trump with the World Tech Leaders in June 2017 is what Microsoft needed, to push it’s agenda. And it was a politically correct move too, with Trump’s not so cordial relationship with the Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos. Microsoft was already gaining a good clientele among Airbus, ABN Amro, ExxonMobil etc. But no client is as good as the United States of America. For continuity, stronghold and market capitalization.

Since some time US has been working on making it’s defense department technologically more agile. The JEDI, or Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure has been in pipeline since recently, as early as March 2018. It is aimed at creating a strong and secure cloud computing and infrastructure network for Pentagon. The RFP was rolled out and was supposed to close by May-2018. And every analyst around the world knew who it was going to. Amazon. IBM had already failed in suing Amazon over the CIA deal for copyright infringement. Oracle tried the same over JEDI and lost the case to Amazon (even when the bidding was live). Google was also a contender. And it has experience too. Google handles Project Maven for US Military. For the uninitiated, Project Maven is a Pentagon project involving machine learning and engineering talent to distinguish people and objects in drone videos. Basically to know who to shoot at who to not. It is also known as the Algorithmic Warfare Cross Functional Team. But Google employees did not want to be a party to aid military on warfare mechanisms.

Although Google had updated it’s workplace guidelines and asked it’s employees to focus on work and not political debate and other personal arguments. This might be completely unrelated, but definitely is in perspective. However, Google has decided to not renew it’s contract for Project Maven because of employee’s demand, not to provide AI support for warfare. On similar note, Microsoft’s employees are also not happy about the Project IVAS – Integrated Visual Augmentation System also known as HoloLens ($479 million worth). But Microsoft defended it’s actions and subtly put it out that business has it’s own agenda.
